Hi Reader,
Quick heads up: Karen Pryor Academy's January sale just started, and I don't want you to miss it.
This is one of only TWO times per year (January and September) that KPA offers 20% off everything - courses, training gear, books, all of it.
Why am I telling you about this?
Because I get a kickback from KPA if you purchase the course? No. I wish I did, but KPA doesn't have an affiliate program on courses, even for their certified training partners like me. Strange but true. ๐คท๐ปโโ๏ธ
I'm sharing the offer because the Dog Trainer Foundations course is hands-down the single best investment anyone with a dog (any dog - LGD or other) could make, and one I recommend to all of my Maremma clients. And right now it's $200 instead of $250.
I wrote up a full blog post with all the sale details, which courses I recommend, and some important tips about course holds and expiration dates that I learned the hard way.

But here's the real story I want to share:
โOne of my Maremma clients, Violet, wrote a guest post for me a couple of years ago that perfectly captures why this training matters so much.
Violet had a 2-year-old Great Pyrenees named Marshmallow before she got Cotton Candy (CC) from me. With Marshmallow, she tried to figure training out on her own - YouTube videos, basic classes, picking up tips here and there.
Marshmallow developed what she called "emergency itch" - every time she asked him to do something, he'd suddenly need to scratch, then yawn, then reluctantly comply in slow motion. He was mouthy, chewed everything, showed stress signals she didn't understand.
Before bringing CC home, Violet took the Dog Trainer Foundations course.
Her words: "Throughout Marshmallow's puppyhood, I had been ransacking the internet for positive reinforcement dog training tips. But tips are exactly that: a melange of 'do x' instructions. The DTF course provided me with the structure I needed to internalize the positive reinforcement training concept."
The course taught her to recognize stress signals, understand what actually counts as reinforcement (versus bribery), and build a real foundation of knowledge instead of just collecting random tips.
CC has never had "emergency itch." She's polite, relaxed, and happy. And here's the kicker - Marshmallow's stress behaviors improved too once Violet started actually understanding and applying positive reinforcement properly.
Violet's story says it all: "With 2 happy relaxed dogs, my life has gotten easier. And we'll just end the story here and live happily ever after."

Sale Details:
- When: All month - ends January 31st
- Discount: 20% off everything
- Best deal: Dog Trainer Foundations normally $250, now $200
- Also on sale: Better Veterinary Visits, all other courses, training gear, books, videos
Pro tip: Not ready to start right away? Buy during the sale and email KPA to put the course on hold. The clock won't start until you're ready. Just make sure you actually do this - courses have expiration dates and if you forget to request a hold, you could lose access. (Trust me, I've made this mistake!)
This sale only happens in January and September. If you've been thinking about investing in training education, now's the time.
Questions about which course is right for you? Hit reply - I'm happy to help.
Kim
P.S. - Next week I'll be sharing another of my puppy client's experience taking KPA and other dog training courses. Spoiler: she loved what she learned and the positive impact it had on her partnership with her dog so much she took THREE courses. Stay tuned!
